What is the difference between an AI mention and an AI citation?
Concept
An AI mention is the brand appearing in the text of an answer; an AI citation is the source the model draws on in support of that answer.
Two different signals
A mention measures the brand's standing inside the answer, and in Bikma it lives in the Share of Voice module. A citation concerns the domains the model uses as sources, and in Bikma it lives in the External Sources module, classified by type and Domain Authority. A brand can be heavily mentioned without controlling the sources that talk about it, or appear rarely yet always alongside authoritative domains.
Why keep them apart
Generative engines favour third-party sources, so mentions and citations follow different logics and call for different actions: mentions are worked through content and presence, citations through digital PR and holding ground on the domains models treat as reliable. And in any case, being cited is not the same as being preferred: that is why sentiment and an accuracy measure are needed too.
Worth remembering
Standing (mention), influence over sources (citation) and preference (sentiment) are three distinct things: reading them together avoids the wrong conclusions.
