What is answer engine optimization and how does it differ from SEO?
Concept
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimising content so that it gets used by answer engines, which return a direct reply instead of a list of links.
How it differs from SEO
SEO aims to rank a page; AEO aims to supply clear, self-contained answers the engine can reuse directly. In practice it rewards content structured as question and answer, with sentences that hold up out of context and information that can be checked: the same principle this documentation is built on.
The role of measurement
AEO only produces results if it is measured: you need to know on which questions the brand makes it into the answer and on which it stays out. Bikma measures that outcome, showing where the brand appears or is absent in AI answers and with which sources, so optimisation becomes a closed loop instead of an act of faith.
Worth remembering
AEO, GEO and SEO are not in competition: they are three complementary ways of being found, from the link to the direct answer.
